Umbrian Honey from Marsciano (PG)
Although the strawberry tree is quite common in Italy, its late flowering period makes honey production difficult.
Strawberry tree honey is amber in color when liquid, turning hazelnut/brown with gray/green hues when crystallized. Its aroma is reminiscent of ivy leaves, coffee grounds, cocoa beans, rhubarb, and gentian. On the palate, it similarly delivers a flavor of wet tobacco leaves and bitter roots. The most commonly used adjective to describe it, however, is undoubtedly “bitter.” This unique characteristic makes it a truly niche honey, reserved for connoisseurs of this unique flavor.
Like all dark honeys, it is extremely rich in antioxidants, especially polyphenols and flavonoids. Strawberry tree honey is also an important anti-inflammatory and, like other types of honey, is very useful for combating coughs, sore throats, and various seasonal ailments.
